„Aufklärung“ zählt zu den wesentlichen Leitbegriffen der westlichen „Moderne“. „Aufklärung“ meint ein Projekt, das Traditionen und Autoritäten am Maßstab der Vernunft prüfen, das Leben nach Vernunftprinzipien neu ordnen und zugleich alle Menschen befähigen will, mit Mitteln der Vernunft zu einem selbstbestimmten und besseren Leben zu gelangen, ein Projekt, das bis heute als nicht abgeschlossen gelten muss. Das Seminar wird die Anfänge dieser so verstandenen Aufklärung im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert in England, Frankreich und im Alten Reich in den Blick nehmen. Gefragt wird nach Akteuren und Leitbegriffen sowie nach den wichtigsten Wirkungsfeldern der Aufklärung für Staat, Wirtschaft, Religion und Kirche, Gesellschaft und Bildungssystemen. Die begleitende „Historische Orientierung“ wird ausgewählte Quellentexte zur europäischen Aufklärung diskutieren, in ihren historischen Kontext einordnen und interpretieren.
