230537 Social and Cultural Studies: North America (S) (SoSe 2009)

This course fulfills the BA/M.Ed.requirement for Introduction to American Civilization (old title) in Basic Module 4.

The year 2008 has brought momentous changes, both positive and negative, to the United States. The presidency of Barack Hussein Obama in the context of a worldwide economic crisis and against the backdrop of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel-Gaza faces enormous challenges. Americans are exhilarated by the promise of their new leader and his historic victory but are also wary of what may lie ahead. This course will attempt to place this unprecedented moment in a broader framework of the dynamics of American Culture.

We will begin with a focus on the election itself and the nature of government and then go on to examine American self-understanding in the post-Bush world with respect to issues of politics, race, ethnicity, religion, education , regional geography and social class. What underlying beliefs, attitudes, and cultural experiences do Americans share? Where are the cultural fault lines in the society? How do Americans define themselves? Is this truly a transformational moment in American society?

Thinking about the United States will also force you to think more about yourself and where you come from and (are coming from). Are there fundamental differences between the European and American "ways of life"? Is there still "an American Dream"? Only one? What about a European Dream? You are asked to bring an open mind, as well as a generous portion of curiosity and a sense of humor with you to class. Be ready to ask questions and look for answers and exchange views with your classmates.

Since we will be viewing and discussing several full-length video materials, students should be prepared to spend a full 120 minutes in class during some weeks and/or find time in their weekly schedules for viewing in small groups in the Mediothek. There will be a midterm and final examination at the end of the course. Course materials will be provided in class and via e-mail.
