Das Seminar versucht sich dem Thema Journalismus aus der Perspektive soziologischer Theorien zu nähern. Nach einer Einführung in kommunikationswissenschaftliche Grundlagen der Kommunikatorforschung, systemtheoretischer Medientheorie und der Soziologie der Massenmedien steht die theoretische Analyse empirischer Studien im Vordergrund. Durch Vergleiche und Abgrenzungen zu anderen sozialen Phänomenen sollen Kriterien und Grenzen journalistischer Kommunikation herausgearbeitet werden.

Ein hohes Interesse an theoretischen Fragestellungen, mindestens aber Grundkenntnisse in theoretischer Soziologie (vgl. die Inhalte des BA-Programms "Grundbegriffe der Soziologie" und "Soziologische Theorie") sind erforderlich.
Die Bereitschaft zur regelmäßigen Teilnahme am Seminar sowie zur gründlichen vorbereitenden Lektüre – vorwiegend englischsprachiger Literatur – wird ebenfalls vorausgesetzt.
