„What were the Crusades?" überschreibt Jonathan Riley-Smith seine Darstellung eines hochmittelalterlichen Phänomens von universalhistorischer Bedeutung: den Aufbruch der „Franken" nach "Outremer" zur Befreiung der Heiligen Stätten aus den Händen von Andersgläubigen. Vom Aufruf Urbans II. bis zur Aufgabe Akkons wird die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Orient und Okzident, der arabisch-muslimischen Welt mit den christlich-europäischen Mächten, an den Kategorien von Ideal und Wirklichkeit untersucht. Die geschichtlichen Ursachen, Grundzüge und Hauptträger der traditionellerweise in sieben Kriegszüge eingeteilten Kreuzfahrerära sind durch vielfältige Zeugnisse -- von Augenzeugenberichten bis zur Liederdichtung -- dokumentiert und sollen transkulturell beleuchtet werden.
