"Die Menschen sind und bleiben von Geburt an frei und gleich an Rechten," so die französische Menschenrechtserklärung von 1789. Tatsächlich jedoch waren europäische Gesellschaften auch im 19. Jahrhundert weiterhin von Ungleichheiten gekennzeichnet. In einem Querschnitt diskutiert dieses Seminar soziale Ungleichheiten. Menschen unterschieden sich bzw. wurden unterschieden nach Geschlecht, Alter, und 'Rasse'/'Ethnizität', nach ihrer geografischen, sprachlichen, sozio-ökonomischen, politischen, konfessionellen Herkunft. Wie funktionierte die Herstellung von Hierarchien und Differenz? Welche Rolle spielten dabei politische Rahmenbedingungen und Gesetzgebungen, Wirtschaft und Arbeitsmarkt, Religion und Wissenschaft?
