In this seminar we will look at scientific attempts to analyze and sequence the human genome in the second half of the 20th century and their application to medical and national health care systems across Europe and the US. The seminar will start by analyzing the development of DNA sequencing projects in the late 1980s and 90s in the UK and the US and their influence on the scientific and institutional advancement of genomics in these countries. We will then pay special attention to the Human Genome Project which aimed at deciphering the complete human genome and to the emergence of new „data-driven“ biomedical sciences at the edge of the 21st century.
