Durch die Vorlesung sollen Psychologiestudierende im Bachelorstudiengang die Möglichkeit bekommen sich für den Master Psychotherapie zu qualifizieren.
In dieser Vorlesung werden die Grundlagen der allgemeinen Pharmakologie, die in die Bereiche Pharmakokinetik und Pharmakodynamik unterteilt wird, erläutert.
Darüber hinaus werden im Grundlagenteil die Arzneimittelentwicklung und verschiedene Informationsquellen für zugelassene Medikamente dargestellt.Im speziellen Teil Psychopharmakotherapie werden zunächst die wesentlichen Wirkstoffgruppen (Antidepressiva, Antipsychotika etc.) detailliert vorgestellt, wobei jeweils durch Fallvignetten der klinische Bezug sichergestellt wird. Abschließend wird die Psychopharmakotherapie und deren Stellenwert im Rahmen eines umfassenden Behandlungsplans für verschiedene psychische Störungen erläutert.

Die Klinische Pharmakologie und Pharmakotherapie ist in der Ausbildung zur / zum approbierten Psychotherapeutin / Psychotherapeuten als zentrales Thema definiert, weil jeder Psychotherapeut, ein fundiertes Wissen über die Anwendung von Medikamenten besitzen muss.
Die Vorlesung vermittelt entsprechend dem Ausbildungsziel das für eine psychotherapeutische Tätigkeit erforderliche Grundlagen- und Vertiefungswissen im Bereich der Pharmakologie im Allgemeinen sowie der Psychopharmakotherapie im Speziellen.
