Contents:
Class work will concentrate both on increasing students' word power using
a) S. Isaacs' Magic Hour, which I strongly advise students to read before term starts (second-hand copies are available from the Amazon site),
b) the exercises on my homepage for collocations, and
c) the online 3rd edition of The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy for proverbs and idioms, which two sections students may well want to download even before term time.
The other major class activity will be to analyse the Modern English vocabulary, based on A Survey of Modern English (see below for details of both books)
Place in the curriculum:
This is one of the courses in Basic Module Five and should be done only after you have done all three courses in BM One.
Credits and Requirements:
BA-students can earn three credit points for regular, active class work; presenting a satisfactory project and passing a class test.
