The course will provide an introduction into the works of William Shakespeare in the context of Renaissance literature and culture. We will study a cross-section of the dramatic and poetic work of the Bard from Stratford upon Avon with a view to recent literary and cultural theory.
Please acquire copies of William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, Othello and Twelfth Night (Arden Edition or New Cambridge Edition). All other texts will be made available on the eKVV.
Please note that this course comes with a relatively heavy reading load (including both primary and secondary literature). Moreover, Shakespeare's plays and poems are quite challenging to the modern reader. It is therefore highly recommended to begin reading the plays mentioned above over the term break.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
