Language variation and change is of central interest to a wide range of linguistic disciplines, ranging from language typology, dialectology and historical linguistics to psycho- and sociolinguistics. In this course, we will be looking at research on various aspects of language variation and change, focussing in particular on sociolinguistic perspectives. As language is inherently variable, we will investigate connections between synchronic variation and diachronic change to show that very frequently synchronic patterns of variation are the results of historical developments. Therefore, we will be looking at a number of studies investigating language variation and change, reflecting different research agendas as well as theoretical and methodological orientations. We will discuss the advantages and limitations of approaches, but you will also spend a significant amount of time in the field. You will design and conduct your own small-scale research project and present the results of your investigation at the end of the semester.
