This study group deals with grammar teaching in the EFL classroom for grades 5 through 10 (Sek I), and thus is directed at students wanting to become teachers for middle or high school (HRSGe/GymGe). Looking back on English lessons at my old school with the knowledge I now gathered from BM3 and PM1 classes, I cannot help but question the methods many of my teachers used. We have known for a while now that language teaching is most effective when it is done in meaningful contexts. Yet, despite decades of research on the topic, teachers these days seem to still be hung up on the old “fill in the gap”-exercises. In this course, we will discuss the issue of grammar teaching by revising the information language acquisition theories provide us with, and having a critical look at current teaching strategies, like those represented in student textbooks. On that basis, I would like us to come up with new and engaging methods to teach grammar, which hopefully will be helpful to us for upcoming internships and, of course, the ‘Referendariat’.
This study group will allow you to gain 3 credit points towards the "Int@Home" module.

As this is a student-led study group and not a seminar, all participants can and should help to shape the programme we will follow, and everyone will be expected to contribute by leading sessions, doing research, suggesting material and participating actively in the discussions.
