Due to the rise of the infamous Dungeon and Dragons (DnD) game, Pen-and-Paper (PNP) or tabletop roleplay games (TTRPGs) today are considered a staple of gaming culture all over the world. Yet, the potential of PNP/TTRPGs to enhance or enrich various forms of learning, particularly in the classroom, is seldom utilised, bar some rare extracurricular activities centred around it. Thus, the aim of this study group is to unravel options for integrating PNP/TTRPGs or parts of them into classroom settings.
In this study group, we will explore what potential PNP/TTRPGs offer for (English) teachers and how they can be used to further the linguistic skills and resources as well as the literary understanding of pupils/students. To do so, we will involve ourselves in playing PNP/TTRPGs to gain insights into the game genre and how it feels to engage in it, but also discuss and analyse these game sessions to conclude possible implications for the classroom. Additionally, we will tackle literature on the topic to broaden our perspectives and link our practical experience with theoretical background.
Because PNP/TTRPGs require a certain amount of time to get rolling, this study group is designed as a ‘Blockseminar’ to allow us the temporal room we need.
The first session is designed to be an introductory session in which we get to know each other and discuss things we might want to include or emphasise during the run of this study group.
All following sessions are planned as proper ‘blocks’ of 6 hours, each taking place on Saturdays.

Please note that this study group will take place entirely in English.
Study groups are open to anyone interested in the topic (though B2+ English skills are needed); points can also be gained for Internationalisation at Home.
Experience with PNP/TTRPGs is nice but purely optional. From bloody rookies to battle-hardened veterans, everyone is welcome.
