The seminar explores sociolinguistic aspects in the African context. Herein, we examine how language practices reflect and shape social identities, power relations, and cultural norms across the continent. The seminar dwells on topics such as multilingualism, language ideologies, colonial and post-colonial language policies, language and identity, urban sociolinguistics, youth language, and language in digital spaces. Emphasis will be placed on case studies from various African countries, grounded in current sociolinguistic theories. Through critical reading and discussions, students will develop a nuanced view and understanding of the role of language in African social life.
