Die Vorlesung zeichnet die wechselvolle Geschichte des Vatikan vom römisch-antiken mons Vaticanus im 1. Jh. n. Chr. bis zur Eröffnung des Petersdoms in seiner heutigen Gestalt im 17. Jh. nach. Wie wurde aus einem zunächst eher unscheinbaren Hügel am rechten Tiber-Ufer mit marginaler Bebauung und der ihn umgebenden Ebene im Laufe der Jahrhunderte ein Zentrum weltlicher und kirchlicher Macht? Welchen Anteil an der sukzessiven Machtentfaltung hatten die herausragende Architektur, Bildhauerei und Malerei? Im Mittelpunkt der Vorlesung wird der Vatikan als Zentrum der Kunst stehen, wobei gerade auch die überreichen Antikensammlungen der Päpste in den Blick genommen werden sollen. Der Petersdom mit dem Petersplatz, der Apostolische Palast, die Sixtinische Kapelle, die Vatikanische Bibliothek, die weitläufigen Vatikanischen Gärten, die Vatikanischen Museen sowie die römisch-archäologischen Areale im Vatikan sollen ausführlich behandelt werden.
