There are different ways in which environmental problems, such as floods, storms, droughts, and pollution can affect human migration. In addition, the spatial mobility of humans affects the environment. This course addresses the complex interrelationship between the environment and migration, which is particularly relevant in regions of the world where people directly depend on the natural environment for their livelihoods. The course introduces theoretical and conceptual reflections on environmentally induced migration, draws on case studies from different national contexts, and finally critically addresses the relevance of understanding the effects of environmental change on migration for the design of migration, development and environmental policies at different levels.

This seminar will be taught completely in English. Students should be willing to prepare the classes by reading the indicated literature and to actively participate in the discussions during the sessions.

a) Active participation (Aktive Teilnahme/Studienleistung): Short individual or group-based PowerPoint Presentation and moderation of class.
b) Individual performance (benotete Einzelleistung): Individual paper (15-20 pages) on a topic related to the course (after agreement with lecturer), deadline: 31 October 2018
