Climate change and the pollution/destruction of our planet’s biosphere have become defining discourses of our time and correspondingly feature in a wide range of literary and other cultural products. But while the need to engage in effective political measures attempting to counteract the process of global warming may have never been greater than today, the critical examination of human attitudes towards nature looks back at a long and influential history. This class engages with contemporary and historical representations of environmental issues in literary fiction, poetry, and film. Beyond providing an introduction to Ecocriticism in English studies, the course also emphatically aims at practising and refining general skills of analysing and interpreting text.
The course takes the form of a block seminar in February 2022. Depending on the general situation of the pandemic and the University's Corona-Policy at this time, it will either take place online or in person. As of now, it is provisionally announced as an online course.
A reader with primary and secondary texts will be made available.
