230001 Queer Culture in India: Literature, Cinema and Society (BS) (SoSe 2021)

Contents, comment

From being considered a ‘western’ import to a cultural reclamation, queer culture in India has come a long way to becoming an alternate model of imagining the ‘queer’ discourse. Indian Literature in general and that written in English in particular, cinema at home and in the diaspora, and vibrant queer subcultures in India have not only redefined the public imagination but have ushered in an era of new sensitivity and sensibility. This course will map out the articulation of the Queer in India primarily through mythology, literature, cinema and media. The course will focus on the following areas:

Queer Kāmā: Tracing Queer Desire through Indian Mythology

Out of Lihaaf: Queer Narrative in Post-Independence India

Marinated in Bollywood: Story of Queer Cinema of India

Desi and Queer: Politics of desire and identity in Indian Diaspora

Macaulay’s Curse: Section 377 and Media discourse

Queer Azadi: Reclaiming public spaces

Screening cum discussion on select short/documentary/feature films

A course reader (including a list of online resources) and a choice of relevant films will be made available by the beginning of July, 2021.
