The struggle with language and language-switching are prominent aspects of exile and migration. This seminar will focus on exile and migration in the period of 1933 to 1945; most emigrees were Jews who fled persecution from Germany and France after the Nazi Party came to power in 1933. After the successful escape, many authors found themselves in a dilemma: they often felt as if they had no language anymore to write in or as if they were living a life in translation. Nevertheless, they discovered various ways to write in the language of others. Some soon wrote bilingually, others in mixed languages.
Approaching the phenomenon of German and French exile to America and England from the angle of language, we shall focus on important literary and theoretical texts, most of them written in and some after exile. We will investigate important aspects connected with this caesura, such as aphasia, polylingualism, and poetry in several languages.
Readings will include poems, essays, and novels by Joseph Brodsky, Norman Manea, Raymond Federman, Michael Hamburger, Mascha Kaléko, Hilde Spiel, Hilde Domin and others.

Die verbindlichen Modulbeschreibungen enthalten weitere Informationen, auch zu den "Leistungen" und ihren Anforderungen. Sind mehrere "Leistungsformen" möglich, entscheiden die jeweiligen Lehrenden darüber.
For the Studienleistung students are asked to provide written responses (ca. one paragraph) to the reading assigned for the seminar meetings. These responses, which should be submitted on LernraumPlus the day before the seminar, should briefly analyse or reflect on some aspect of the reading. This will allow us a quick and focused entry into the seminar sessions and stimulate the discussion. As a Prüfungsleistung, students are required to write a Hausarbeit of approximately 12 pages.
