Das laientheoretische Bild der europäischen Sprachlandschaft wird vor allem von den jeweiligen Nationalsprachen geprägt. Tatsächlich jedoch ist die genannte Sprachlandschaft sehr viel differenzierter, als es den generellen Vorstellungen nach scheint. Entsprechend sollen einige der klassischen Minderheitensprachen wie baskisch, kymrisch, kaschubisch sowie die Regionalsprachen occitanisch und niederdeutsch im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen. Die jeweiligen Sprachen sollen in dem Seminar u.a. unter soziolinguistischen, sprachtypologischen, sprachgenetischen, sprachhistorischen und kontaktlinguistischen Gesichtspunkten dargestellt werden. Sofern finanziell realisierbar könnte im Rahmen der Lehrveranstaltung eine Exkursion zu einer europäischen Sprachminderheit organisiert werden.
