Im heutigen allgemeinen gesellschaftlichen Diskurs wird das Judentum oft auf den Holocaust/die Schoah und den Nahostkonflikt reduziert. Viele andere Facetten kommen zu kurz, wodurch ein einseitiges Bild dieser Religion entsteht. Wenn man sich dann doch damit beschäftigt, irritiert oft, dass man vom Judentum mal als Religion, mal als Volk liest. Ja, was ist es denn nun? Das Judentum gilt als älteste monotheistische Religion, ohne das es weder das Christentum, noch den Islam oder die Bahá’í gäbe. Je nach Perspektive reicht das Judentum zurück in eine Zeit, da es eine Stammesreligion neben anderen war oder aber man sieht es als aus der Israelitischen Religion als ihrer Vorgängerin heraus entstanden an. Aus diesen verschiedenen Perspektiven heraus lässt sich die Frage nach Volk oder Religion beantworten. Neben den Auswirkungen auf die aus ihm heraus entstandenen oder zumindest von ihr maßgebend beeinflussten Religionen ist das Judentum aber auch heute eine Größe für sich selbst, vielgestaltig, in ständiger Auseinandersetzung sowohl mit den eigenen Traditionen, als auch mit der nichtjüdischen Mitwelt. Die Lehrveranstaltung gliedert sich in zwei Hauptteile: Erstens wird das heutige Judentum in seinen grundlegenden Inhalten, Bräuchen und Richtungen vorgestellt. Im zweiten Teil wird die Religionsgeschichte der Israelitischen Religion und des Judentums von der Zeit der Stammesreligion bis heute nachgezeichnet.
