230253 William Shakespeare, Othello (S) (SoSe 2022)

Contents, comment

The idea of this class is to turn Othello inside out. Instead of comparing several plays with similar themes, we will do close readings of this one text and place it in its various social, cultural and political contexts and approach it from various theoretical angles. We will also look at selected scenes from selected film adaptations.

Bibliography

William Shakespeare, Othello [the First Folio version, not the quarto!].
You MUST read this play in an annotated critical edition from the New Cambridge series, or Oxford Shakespeare or Third Arden (or Penguin, IF it has a NAMED EDITOR).
No school editions, no reclam or similar. (Even of you're doing this for VM7.) No grubby internet pages. Even the online Folger Shakespeare editions aren't sufficient for this purpose, because they don't have an introduction or annotations.

In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
