One of the most interesting facts about the horror genre is that its purpose is to make us experience emotions that we dislike feeling in real life. Great horror fiction has the power to disturb, unsettle, and terrify us and these unpleasant emotions are exactly what we hope to feel when we read horror. Why do people enjoy fear and how does horror fiction make us feel afraid? What psychological insights does the genre reveal and what literary techniques do authors employ to disquiet and scare us? In this course, we will examine these questions through some classic stories by such great American writers as Edgar Allan Poe and Henry James (these works are available for free online at www.online-literature.com). (See the link below!)
We will also look at Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and the original 1963 film version of the novel.
