Fans of the Supernatural in popular fiction must be thrilled these days: there is hardly a weeknight without at least one TV program starring werewolves, vampires, ghost or witches plus their respective hunters. While this broad offering is certainly a trend, the fascination with the metaphysical is not. Otherwordly creatures and the boundary between the worlds have intrigued writers and readers for centuries and brought forth such classics as Stoker's "Dracula" und Shelley's "Frankenstein".
In this class we will be interested in the depths and shadows of the genre: how fear can be entertaining, how creatures of the dark have found their way into the limelight, why the Supernatural is particularly apt for a projection of social and cultural angst and why a 21st century vampire has more in common with a singer of a boyband than a monster.
