The ways in which the social shapes the individual have always been an interesting subject to inquire about. Oftentimes, and in western Europe, the origins of thinking about social conditions are dated back to classical Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. In modern times, the list of scholars who also had a go at the subject we now call sociology is long: Names such as St. Simon, Comte, Durkheim, Hegel, Marx and Weber pop up. In this seminar, we will have a look at the various ways historians wrote on the scholarly discussion about the social and the scientific undertaking we have now come to call „Social Sciences“ or „Sociology“. The seminar will be held in English and the literature will be English as well. If you want to participate you should be willing to read the texts and to engage in the discussion.
