In this course we will explore the historic and social forces which shaped George Orwell's political activism and world view, as well as those carrying on his ethical legacy, such as contemporary whistle-blowers like Edward Snowden. We will read excerpts from several of Orwell’s texts. Students will give presentations on a related topic of their choice.

Since WWII the face of democracy in the Global North has undergone a rapid change, with contemporary Right Wing groups and politicians, as well as technological advances like AI and Social Media, now threatening its very existence. We will see how Orwell foresaw this, and how his texts can inform current political knowledge.

It is recommended (but not necessary) that you read the full novel 1984 before our meetings start.
