The Medical Physics degree programme in Bielefeld offers an ideal introduction to a highly topical field of work with excellent career prospects. Among other things, the degree programme forms the basis for further training as a medical physics expert at hospitals. In addition, the Medical Physics degree programme also offers ideal conditions for working in research and development in companies and non-university institutes as well as in basic research in the field of medical technology. Medical physicists develop new assistance systems for minimally invasive surgery, for example, by using virtual reality to insert three-dimensional computer tomographic image data into the surgeon's field of vision or by using artificial intelligence to analyse and display complex data for rapid decision-making. They invent and develop new medical imaging procedures or create highly precise and minimally invasive treatment methods. The Medical Physics degree programme provides an overview of all areas of physics as well as the theoretical and experimental foundations of the subject and also includes basic knowledge of medicine (physiology, anatomy, biochemistry). The degree programme lasts six semesters and leads to a Bachelor of Science in Medical Physics.
As one of the first physics faculties in Germany, the faculty in Bielefeld integrates a mathematical preliminary course into the first few weeks of the degree programme. This preparatory course specifically teaches you the maths skills required in the physics lectures and makes the transition from school to university easier. We also teach you important digital skills from the very first semester, including initial programming skills with Python.
We offer small tutorial groups and excellent supervision, which are the basis for a successful degree programme. The lecturers are always accessible and are happy to take time for your concerns. A large part of the practical level is designed as a discussion corridor. You can meet fellow students there to discuss questions and problems, work on exercises together and study together. The new service office is a central point of contact for organisational or content-related questions about your studies.
The degree programme concludes with the Bachelor's thesis, which is written in one of our experimental research groups and introduces you to state-of-the-art research methods. You will work in our excellently equipped laboratories on current issues in the application of optical, spectroscopic, nanomechanical and diagnostic-analytical methods in medical physics.
