BioMechatronics deals with the analysis, design and optimisation of mechatronic products by applying knowledge of the living nature. From the engineer's point of view, this biologically inspired approach is an extension of their repertoire of methods. Ideas can come from biology, medicine or even psychology. BioMechatronics thus takes up partial aspects of bionics. Biomechatronic systems are characterised by the fact that they perceive their environment and can act resource-efficiently within it. A key feature is their ability to adapt to both changing and new tasks and environments. Such systems are particularly relevant in the fields of automation technology and robotics. The knowledge that students are taught in areas such as neurobionics, biorobotics and biomechanics, together with various aspects of systems engineering and embedded systems, opens up a wide range of possible applications from automation technology and robotics to medical technology and basic research, e.g. in the field of motion analysis. Moving systems are thus an important rallying point in BioMechatronics. The degree programme is aimed at students who are looking for a career that is close to research and who are attracted to work on problems from engineering sciences with methods from biology, computer science and mathematics. The German-language Master's degree programme in BioMechatronics is jointly offered by the University of Bielefeld and the Hochschule Bielefeld – University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSBI) and is unique in Germany in terms of both content and organisation.

Formalities / Important information

Course start

Studies can be commenced in both winter and summer semesters.

Length and scope of studies

The standard period of studies is 4 semesters.

The studies BioMechatronics comprise 120 credit points.

Access requirements

Access to the Master programme is granted to those who can provide evidence that they have a first university degree which has a standard period of study of at least six semesters, qualifies for exercising a profession and is in accordance with the examination and study regulations.

In any case, please read the specific Admission requirements for this Masters programme in the examination and study regulations (PDF).

Degrees from accredited Bachelor programmes at German ‘Berufsakademien’ are equivalent to Bachelor degrees from universities.

Applicants with a university degree obtained abroad are granted access provided that the degree they have acquired is deemed sufficient for this purpose and they can provide evidence of the required language skills.
