An interest in language and enjoyment of analytical thinking are good prerequisites for studying computational linguistics. Linguistic communication is something we humans take for granted every day. However, if you try to model language and interaction with computers, it quickly becomes clear how complex our linguistic knowledge actually is.

The computational linguistics programme teaches how linguistic structures and processes of language processing can be investigated using logical-mathematical, empirical and technical means. Students of computational linguistics learn about different linguistic, formal-theoretical and technical approaches to phenomena of language and interaction. They acquire knowledge and practical experience in dealing with linguistic data and with methods of analysing, modelling and structuring this data.

In Bielefeld, the subject of Computational Linguistics is part of the Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies and is linguistically orientated. As a minor subject, the Bachelor's minor in Computational Linguistics has a somewhat smaller scope of study than the core subject. However, the minor also teaches basic skills such as programming and algorithmic and formal thinking in courses that are tailored to (computer) linguistic fields. A number of core subjects from the humanities, but of course also from the field of computer science and mathematics, are therefore particularly suitable for the Bachelor's minor in Computational Linguistics.

Computational linguistic methods and technologies are needed in many applications today. Graduates of computational linguistics have career prospects in the fields of artificial intelligence, data analysis or human-machine interaction.
