Students will be introduced to essential concepts of globalization, entanglements, transculturality, and postcolonial theory. They will be enabled to develop theoretical perspectives independently and to practice the use of transdisciplinary approaches; they will learn to apply and critically reflect on different methods, models and theories belonging to the fields of literary and cultural studies as well as to history. Students will also obtain skills in independently investigating historical and cultural sources, literary texts and critical research and in realizing theoretical analyses of cultural phenomena in their respective historical contexts. They will learn to present results of their research in an appropriate oral and written form and to illustrate these results using paradigmatic examples.
The module enables students to focus on world entanglements and cultural globalization processes. The courses will concentrate on social, political, esthetic, and cultural interactions, processes and phenomena within global contact zones. They will center on globalization, entanglements and delimitations in diverging (pre-colonial, colonial and de-colonial) cultures and power constellations; possible topics to be dealt with include the emergence of global environments, (non-)European nations and empires, religious expansion, migration, trade, or war and violence (in different media). Globality and globalization will be viewed in relation to the varying premises and implications underlying their discursive interpretations and cultural articulations. The program focuses on different world areas such as Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, North America, or Asia. The module comprises a seminar and a lecture/exercise. The seminar will treat research-based problems and their respective technical skills, which include in particular the use of sources, texts and critical research. The lecture/exercise will enable students to obtain deeper research-oriented knowledge on the topics dealt with in the seminar context which come to be embedded in broader literary, cultural and historical contexts.
