Students are able to independently work on a specific (as a rule: empiric) research question and to present it in an adequate form according to the requirements of scientific publications. They are able to work scientifically and to implement the skills and knowledge gained through the course of their studies.
Students work on a (as a rule: empiric) ecological research question provided by one of the departments involved in the the Master programme. In accordance with one of the lecturers of the programme, the thesis may also be written in the context of another department or another institution.
The thesis comprises a presentation of the state of the art of the specific field, the questions and hypotheses, the materials and methods and the results of the student's project and the critical reflection of the results based on relevant literature.
Moreover, the results are presented and discussed during a talk in a seminar.

The Master's thesis is an independent scientific, written elaboration. The scope (excluding title page, abstract, table of contents, list of figures, tables and references, tables, figures, appendix and declaration of independence) depends on the research question and must be agreed with the respective main supervisor.
Students demonstrate that they are able to work independently on a scientific task from the range of topics of the respective degree programme within the specified deadline.
To this end, students contact a supervisor and discuss a possible assignment. The supervisor is responsible for issuing the final assignment. The processing time begins with this issue. At the same time, the supervisor and student must ensure immediate registration at the Examination Office, in particular to appoint the examiners and document the examination procedure. The Master's thesis must be written in German or English after consultation with the supervisor. Group work is not possible.
The processing time is 6 months. The assignment must be designed in such a way that it can be completed within the planned workload of 30 CP (900 hours).
The thesis must be submitted on time and in electronic form to the Examination Office of the Faculty of Biology.
Additional requirements are defined in the MPO.
