Competencies

Upon completion of the Global Health module, students are expected to be able to:

  • Describe key topics, issues and current debates as well as the relevant stakeholders and platforms in the global health field;
  • Consider and explain the overarching historical and political nature and context of global health and the way that this shapes and relates to key global health topics and issues;
  • Describe the main concepts, theories and methods in global health and to adapt and apply them to different health issues and operational contexts; and
  • Reflect upon and integrate the core values and principles that ultimately underlie all issues, activities and contexts relevant to the field of global health.

Content of teaching

The Global Health module will introduce students to the basic theoretical foundations, methodologies and tools in the field of global health from an interdisciplinary perspective. Furthermore, the course will explore and provide critical insights regarding some of the current strategic commitments and agendas, stakeholders and platforms, and the key debates, controversies and challenges in this area.

The module aims to build the knowledge and competencies needed for working on global health in a variety of settings. Guest speakers and other activities in the module provide students with valuable and relevant insights into the nature and activities of different agencies and professionals in the field of global health, within and beyond Germany. Key content and topics covered during the module include the following:

  • Trends in health and burden of disease, global strategies, commitments, players and partnerships
  • Global health governance, structures, functions and financing
  • Sexual, reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health
  • HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases
  • Access to medicines, intellectual property rights and trade
  • Non-communicable diseases (including mental health)
  • Planetary Health: Environment, climate and sustainability
  • Alma Ata and primary health care, Ottawa Charter, Millennium Development Goals, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs)
  • Health equity, gender equality and social justice
  • National health systems: Structure, governance and functions
  • Germany's global health strategy and its expanding role in global health

Die Studien- und Prüfungsleistungen sind in englischer Sprache zu erbringen.

Die Studienleistungen dienen im Rahmen der kompetenzorientierten Lehre dazu, den Lehr- und Lernprozess zu begleiten und bereiten die Studierenden sowohl auf die Erstellung der Modulprüfung als auch der Masterarbeit vor.
Es werden Studienleistungen in Form von bis zu 3 schriftlichen Beiträgen im Umfang von insgesamt ca. 4 Seiten und mündlichen Beiträgen im Umfang von insgesamt 20 Minuten erbracht.
Mögliche Formen sind insbesondere:

  • Vorbereitung und Durchführung einer mündlichen Präsentation (auch in studentischen Kleingruppen),
  • studentische Gruppenarbeiten mit regelmäßiger schriftlicher Protokollierung und mündlicher Präsentation von Arbeitsergebnissen,
  • Erstellung eines Gutachtens,
  • Bearbeitung wissenschaftlicher Texte,
  • Literaturrecherchen,
  • eine Argumentationsrekonstruktion,
  • Zusammenfassung eines Textes,
  • Bearbeitung von statistischen Beispielaufgaben,
  • schriftliche Bearbeitung eines Fallbeispiels,
  • intensive Mitarbeit bei allen Schritten der empirischen Projektarbeit (Projektvorbereitung, Planung, Umsetzung, Auswertung, Ergebnisaufbereitung, Ergebnispräsentation),
  • One-Minute-Paper, Mikro-Themen, Exzerpte, Essays, Exposes etc.
