Apply now!

Through the Master's degree programme in Mathematics, students should acquire the skills and qualifications necessary for the transition to professional practice. They gain an overview of the interrelationships of the field and acquire the ability to work independently according to scientific principles and to apply scientific methods and insights. Students should have deeper knowledge in a sub-area of mathematics. They should be enabled to work scientifically, to present and communicate mathematical facts appropriately, to critically categorise scientific findings and to act responsibly.

Students should have a thorough understanding of the notions and methods of proving. They comprehend how problems are analysed and solved using the methods they have learned. They gain the greatest possible freedom and self-confidence in dealing with mathematical questions. Above all, creativity, visualisation, ease and elegance in the formation of concepts and proofs as well as a feeling for the quality of modelling should be promoted. Students should be introduced to current fields of research as far as possible. They recognise potentials for further development and research objectives. They distinguish between questions of central interest and less important problems for the respective theory, appreciate the clarity and elegance of the presentation of a mathematical fact and they are able to assess the effort and accuracy required for modelling.

The study of mathematics provides a particularly intensive training in the ability to abstract, logical and analytical as well as structured and goal-orientated thinking and the ability to grasp complex issues quickly, as well as a high level of concentration and perseverance. The Master's degree in mathematics qualifies students for various careers in business and administration, which require higher demands on mathematical skills, for example in insurance companies, consultancy, software houses, banks, computing centers, statistical offices, etc.

International Track

This degree programme has an international track. This means that the curriculum can be studied entirely in German or entirely in English within the standard period of study. This can lead to limited study options. Further information and advice can be found on the website of the subject Mathematics and on the information page on programmes with an international track at Bielefeld University.
