The program combines a solid basic biological education with a focus on ecology with the fields of environmental chemistry, environmental physics and environmental law. The goal of environmental biology education is to lay the foundations for an understanding of ecological relationships and to provide a broad range of tools through a combination of classical and state-of-the-art methods, from plant sociology to toxicology and chemical analysis of natural resources.
The Department of Biology offers a 1-subject Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, which leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. The program combines environmental biology and environmental science. The Bachelor of Science program in Environmental Sciences is offered under the leadership of the Faculty of Biology with the participation of the Faculties of Chemistry, Physics, and Law.

The standard period of studies is 6 semesters.

The studies Bachelor with One Core Subject (Academic) Environmental Sciences comprise 180 credit points.

Access requirements

Access to the Bachelor programme is granted to those who have a university entrance qualification suitable for Germany (e. g. German ‘Abitur’).

Special conditions apply to applicants with a foreign certificate of education.

Likewise, special conditions apply to those qualified in vocational education and training.

Application, admission and enrolment  1

The study places are subject to admission restrictions (numerus clausus). You need to register online with the German Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (Foundation for University Admission) (hochschulstart.de) and then apply to Bielefeld University within the currently applicable application deadlines.

Places are allocated in the so-called German ‘Dialogorientiertes Serviceverfahren (DoSV)’ (dialogue-oriented service procedure) and is carried out in several steps. You can find more detailed information and important tips on the dialogue-oriented service procedure on the pages of the Student Office. If you accept an admission offer during this procedure, you can submit your application for enrolment within the set deadline. If you are already enrolled at Bielefeld University, you need to apply for a change of degree programme. After the deadline expires, your admission will be invalid.
