Main research interests

  • Microglia and TGF-β signalling pathways
  • Neuroinflammation & neurodegeneration
  • Age-related changes of the brain
  • Glial interactions in models of Alzheimer's disease

Current research topics

Microglia and TGF-β signalling pathways

  • Analysis of the role of TGF-β in microglia
  • Influence of the signalling pathway on the phagocytosis of amyloid beta

Amyloid-beta interactions & neurodegeneration

  • Mechanisms of phagocytosis of different amyloid beta species
  • Importance of glial cells (microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes) in degenerative processes
  • Investigation of oligomeric and fibrillar peptides (Aβ, α-synuclein)

Age-related changes of the brain

  • Single-cell analyses to characterise age-related changes in the mouse brain
  • Focus on cellular heterogeneity and glial ageing processes

Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease

  • Use of organotypic slice cultures as a model for neuroinflammatory mechanisms
  • Investigation of glial protection and damage mechanisms

Methodological development

  • Construction and utilisation of specific panels for microglial gene transcription profiles
  • Further development of experimental models for glia depletion and glia interactions
