In this class, you will delve deeper into the discipline of phonetics – the study of sound – by learning not only about the articulatory, acoustic and auditory aspects of speech but also about basic instruments and methods that allow us to visualize and work with phonetic data. Linking this to English phonology (e.g. by looking at sound change throughout the history of the English language), we will conduct small-scale phonetic experiments within the class to combine theory with practice.
