402362 Primary health and long-term care (S) (WiSe 2024/2025)

At the end of this research-based seminar, students will be able to conduct a health services research project with an international or cross-country comparative focus. The subject of this project is a problem of health and nursing care in the field of pri-mary health and long-term care.

In this winter semester the seminar is conducted in the frame of the research project “Advanced Nursing Practice and interprofessional collaboration in primary health care” (APN-PHC). In this research project, researchers from the AG 6 of the School of Public Health, Bielefeld University, the Western Paraná State University (UN-IOESTE), Cascavel/PR, Brazil, and the National School of Public Health (ENSP/FIOCRUZ), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, work closely together. They collabora-tively analyze and compare the implementation and development of APN roles and interprofessional collaboration in primary health care in Germany and Brazil.

Participants of the research-based seminar are invited to discuss with the researchers the project and conduct their own analyses. They will use focus group data of the main research project and elaborate on literature and data analysis in order to understand and compare the health systems of Brazil and Germany, their primary health care organization, nursing roles, and interprofessional collaboration of primary care doctors and nurses.
After an introduction of the topic, the course will be divided into three thematic blocks.
In Block I, based on international literature research on the topic, the selection of the countries that the research project focusses on will be discussed and research questions further refined according to the interests of the participants. Basic concepts/strategies of (a) primary health and long-term care, esp. primary health care nursing, and (b) international health system research will be introduced and/or deepened (drawing on MPH 5, MPH 7a, 7f).
In Block II, students develop a study design and plan their own study. Appropriate methods as well as the approaches and challenges of conducting research in international contexts will be discussed.
In Block III, students conduct (elements of) the planned study. In the seminar, data collected will be collaboratively analyzed and interpreted.
