In diesem Seminar werden wir untersuchen, wie staatliche Instutionen und demokratische Prozesse im Alltag erfahrbar werden. Anhand ethnographischer Studien aus unterschiedlichen Teilen der Welt werden wir analysieren, wie Menschen den Staat wahrnehmen, mit ihm interagieren und seine Strukturen für sich zu nutzen versuchen. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt postkolonialen Perspektiven und der Frage, inwiefern Staat und Demokratie als Produkte europäischer Geschichte mit lokalen Vorstellungen von guter Herrschaft in anderen kulturellen Kontexten in Spannung stehen.
Aufgrund der internationalen Ausrichtung der Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie liegt neuere ethnographische Literatur sehr selten in deutscher Übersetzung vor. Von Teilnehmenden wir daher die Bereitschaft erwartet, sich mit englischsprachiger Lektüre auseinanderzusetzen.
