230046 Where the Global Meets the Local: United Nations in the 21st Century (S) (WiSe 2012/2013)

Mobility, travel of ideas, and cultural exchange have become the rule, rather than the exception, in the 21st century. In an increasingly market-oriented world, local actors enter and/or leave global settings. But what is it when global actors, say international organizations such as UNICEF and UNDP, enter regions and interact with the locals? What implications do such interactions have in as diverse settings as Germany, Mexico, Indonesia or Ethiopia? How international do such organizations remain as they begin their activities in a country? How local do the locals remain after being addressed by the projects that such organizations undertake in their society?

These and several other aspects related to the global-local encounter will form the discussions of the block seminar. Join us to find answers to these questions through group-work on a region of your choice, presentations and a movie session. We hope that we can provide an insider’s view of any such international organization by inviting a professional who works with the United Nations. This way, we will discuss some real-life opportunities to work with such organizations.
