In this seminar, we are first going to discuss excerpts from key texts of queer literary and cultural theory in order to develop a critical stance towards and tools for the analysis and interpretation of representations of queerness in different media and genres.

These theoretical concepts will be applied to novels, poems and excerpts from plays of different literary periods. Covering Early Modern literature to Postmodernism in exemplary fashion will serve to illustrate to what extent sexuality is culturally constructed and subject to change. This will also give us the occasion to consider the relevance of intersections of race, class, sex and gender.

In addition to the literary examples, we are going to examine film adaptations and television series. All these ‘texts’ will be ‘read’ as discursive elements of the struggle for liberation and equality, against homophobia and marginalisation.

Bibliography

Please purchase and read a copy of E. M. Forster’s "Maurice" and Jeanette Winterson’s "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit". Additional material will be provided in a reader.

For two credit points, you will have to give a five-minute presentation of your critical analysis of a representation of queerness in a text of your choice that is not part of the syllabus (this includes films, television series, or advertising). For three credit points, your presentation needs to be put into writing (1200 words).
