The Caribbean definitely owes a significant part of its cultural heritage to the presence of African slaves brought in during the 17th and 18th centuries, especially from the West coast of the 'black continent'. In Cuba the most important contributions were made by the Yoruba, Caribalí and Arará groups. In this seminar we will be exploring the different manifestations of those African influences in the spheres of Cuban literature, religion, music and arts. Students can obtain up to 3 LP for oral presentation and regular essay writing.
