“We teach p=0.05 because it’s what we use; we use p=0.05 because it’s what we are taught.”
In this course, criticisms of p-values, p-value thresholds and significance testing will be discussed. Besides, recently proposed alternatives will be presented.
To this end, selected papers of the journal issue "Statistical Inference in the 21st Century: A World Beyond p < 0.05", published by The American Statistician in 2019, will be read. In each session, 1-2 students will present a summary of a paper, followed by a group discussion started by a predetermined discussant. All participants are expected to read the current material before the weekly sessions. In the first session, the course instructor will give an introduction into the topic. Besides, the modalities and schedule of the presentations will be discussed. The course language will be English.
It will be expected that participants are familiar with basic statistics (e.g. from introductory courses in statistics, stochastics or econometrics). Participants should have an idea about what a p-value is.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
