Öffentlichkeit in der modernen Gesellschaft wird üblicherweise vor allem als massenmedial gestützte Öffentlichkeit begriffen. Die Betrachtungen des Strukturwandels der Öffentlichkeit durch das System der Massenmedien bilden den Ausgangspunkt für anschließende Fragestellungen: Wie stellt sich der weitere Verlauf dieses Strukturwandels im Kontext einer fortschreitenden Differenzierung des Mediensystems dar? Werden hier sich zuspitzende Tendenzen der Personalisierung, Emotionalisierung und ganz allgemein einer Orientierung an Unterhaltung in der öffentlichen Kommunikation sichtbar? Kann man in diesem Zusammenhang von einem neuen Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit sprechen? Handelt es sich um angemessene Präsentationsweisen in einer "Unterhaltungsöffentlichkeit" oder deutet sich eine Krise der Öffentlichkeit an? Schaffen die zahlreichen neuen Internetanwendungen im Zusammenspiel mit den klassischen Massenmedien neue Formen der Öffentlichkeit?
