Unter den Bucolica bzw. Eklogen Vergils sind 10 Hirtengedichte zu verstehen, die nach der klassischen Datierung in den Jahren 42-39 v. Chr. entstanden und die den Ruhm des Dichters Vergil, des Verfassers des späteren Nationalepos der Römer, mithin der Aeneis begründeten. Im Zuge seiner bukolischen Gedichte, die in der Folgezeit zum Vorbild für Hirtendichtung, für den pastoralen Roman und für das Schäferdrama wurden, ging Vergil gegenüber seinem griechischen Vorbild, dem hellenistischen Dichter Theokrit und dessen Hirtendichtung sehr eigene, vergilische Wege und bereicherte die Gattung sichtbar um wesentliche Elemente. Dieser vergilischen Art von Hirtendichtung in all ihren Besonderheiten und Facetten wird das Seminar systematisch nachspüren, ebenso ihrer Bedeutung für die spätere europäische Schäfer- bzw. Pastoraldichtung.
