In dieser Veranstaltung soll in einem ersten Schritt das soziologische Konzept des Fremden geklärt werden. Anschließend werden Hauptkategorien, nach denen Fremdheit bestimmt wird, diskutiert (vor allem Rasse, Nation und Religion). Um der Situation der Fremden in der Bundesrepublik den Eindruck eines singulären Phänsomens zu nehmen, sollen dann in einem historischen Rückblick frühere Einwanderungsbewegungen und traditionelle Fremde (u.a. Juden, Hugenotten, Muslims) dargestellt werden, bevor aktuelle Fremde (u.a. ausländische Arbeitnehmer, Spätaussiedler, Asylbewerber und Flüchtlinge) behandelt werden.
Themen für Referate können bereits in den Sprechstunden während der vorlesungsfreien Zeit ("Semesterferien") abgesprochen werden.
