Finaler Gegenstand des Kurses sind die mathematisch definierten "Tree Adjoining Grammars" (kurz: TAGs), die hier beispielhaft als sogenannter "mild kontextsensitiver Grammatikformalismus" fungieren, der in der linguistischen Beschreibung natürlicher Sprache dazu dient, (insbesondere auf Satzebene) auch solchen sprachlichen Phänomenen gerecht zu werden, die mit einfachen kontextfreien Phrasenstrukturgrammatiken nicht adäquat beschrieben werden können.
Die Veranstaltung beginnt im ersten Teil mit der Bereitstellung und gemeinsamen Erarbeitung der notwendigen mathematischen Grundlagen. Danach werden Baumadjunktionsgrammatiken selbst im Blickpunkt stehen.
Die aktive Teilnahme am Seminar, wozu auch das Bearbeiten von Übungsaufgaben während der Sitzungen zählt, ist Voraussetzung für den Erwerb eines Teilnahmescheins. Für einen Einzelleistungsnachweis sind zusätzliche Anforderungen in Form einer schriftlichen Hausarbeit zu erfüllen.
