Warum eroberte England Indien und nicht umgekehrt? Dieses Seminar thematisiert Indiens Gang in die Moderne. Wir beschäftigen uns mit den sozio-ökonomischen, techno-wissenschaftlichen, militärischen, politischen und institutionellen Entwicklungen Südasiens zwischen dem 17. und 19. Jahrhundert und vergleichen diese mit den Dynamiken Europas. Dies soll dabei helfen, besser zu verstehen warum die industrielle Revolution zuerst in England und nicht in fortgeschrittenen Regionen Indiens stattfand und Westeuropa im 19. Jahrhundert eine globale Hegemonialstellung einnehmen konnte.
