Kapitalismus wird üblicherweise als profitorientierte gesellschaftliche Ordnung von Produktion, Distribution und Konsumption definiert und je nach historisch-spezifischer Ausgestaltung etwa als Frühkapitalismus, Fordismus oder Überflussgesellschaft kategorisiert.
Wir fragen in diesem Lektüreseminar hingegen nach den Vorbedingungen ökonomischer Prozesse, also den Politiken, sozialen Konfigurationen und Kulturen, die diese Abfolge ermöglichen und prägen. Dabei lenken wir unseren Blick auf Investitionen. Investitionen verstehen wir hier in einem weiten Sinne als jene Vorleistungen, die gegeben sein müssen, um wirtschaftliche Prozesse in Gang zu setzen: Wer investiert, Staat oder Marktakteure? Zwecks Aufrüstung, Hauseigentum oder sozial-ökologischer Transformation? Kurzfristig oder langfristig? Die Frage, unter welchen politischen, rechtlichen und kulturellen Bedingungen wofür investiert wird, eröffnet uns einen spezifischen soziologischen Zugang auf (historische) Wirtschaftsordnungen.
Das Seminar verfolgt also nicht die (vergebliche?) Absicht, eine allumfassende Übersicht der wirtschaftssoziologischen Klassiker zu präsentieren. Vielmehr fragen wir ergebnisoffen, welche Erkenntnisse wir gewinnen, wenn wir Wirtschaftsordnungen als Vorleistungsordnungen untersuchen und begeben uns dafür auf Spurensuche bei den sogenannten Klassikern.
