Dieses Seminar soll den Studierenden die Universität als Gegenstand soziologischer Überlegungen und Reflexion erschließen helfen. Ausgangspunkt ist dabei, dass der Hochschule eine besondere Funktion bei der Innovation und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit moderner Gesellschaften zugeschrieben wird. Gleichzeitig hält man an ihrer traditionellen Funktion der „Bildung des gesamten Menschen“ fest. Um nun diesen z.T. sich widersprechenden Erwartungen gerecht zu werden, wird das deutsche Hochschulsystem seit gut 20 Jahren in drei parallelen Reformprozessen umgebaut: Erstens wird das Universitätsmanagement hierarchischer und effizienter gestaltet; zweitens wird die die Lehre auf ein konsekutives Studienmodell umgestellt (BA-MA-PhD); drittens wird die Forschungsförderung konzentriert.
In diesem Seminar steht die soziologische Literatur zu diesen drei Elementen des Reformprozesses im Vordergrund, womit auch die Struktur des Seminars weitgehend vorgegeben ist.
