The seminar introduces students to the critical theory of queer theory which emerged from feminist/women and queer studies in the 1990s to question essentialist and binary oppositions and gender hierarchies and to shift the critical focus to the "mismatches between, sex, gender and desire" (Annamarie Jagose). Moreover, the seminar includes perspectives from queer of Color and queer diaspora critics, particularly from the Americas, who have rendered the hegemony of certain forms of "queerness" and "queer theory" problematic, which does not reflect the experiences of non-White or non-Western positions. The seminar finally discusses the concept of intersectionality introduced by African Amerian feminists as a means to address the "interlocking axes of oppression" (Combahee River Collective) that stratify societies, particularly in transnational and transcultural contexts and with regards to global inequalities.
