La novela policíaca representa el género que, más que los demás, articula el malestar en la cultura moderna. En las narrativas de crímenes, la modernidad trata de negociar las incertidumbres que causaron los cambios fundamentales en las formas de vida social y los órdenes políticos, provocados por los procesos económicos y técnicos de los dos siglos pasados. En este sentido, las narrativas criminales ofrecen una verdadera introducción en la vida moderna, entrenando nuestro sensorio frente a los riesgos de la vida moderna y prometiendo una cierta restitución del orden, pero sobre todo configuran formas de reflexión sobre las técnicas modernas de dominación y sus consecuencias. Esto se aplica en particular a la literatura policial latinoamericana que se ve obligada a lidiar con la realidad poscolonial y neocolonial a la que están expuestas las sociedades y los mundos de vida del Sur.
El seminario pretende dar un panorama de las formas narrativas y modos de escribir más importantes de las narrativas criminales latinoamericanas. Para ello, se leerán y se analizarán tanto clásicos del género (Borges/Bioy Casares, Rafael Bernal, Rodolfo Walsh, Leonardo Padura, Paco Ignacio Taibo II) como narraciones contemporáneas y más experimentales (Ricardo Piglia, Roberto Bolaño, Elmer Mendoza, Liliana Escliar, Laura Restrepo, Claudia Piñeiro).
